Dear Sierrans,
Don't forget: this coming Sat., Sept. 24, is the worldwide "Moving Planet" day sponsored by Bill McKibben's organization, 350.org, to demonstrate the need to reduce CO2 concentration levels in our atmosphere to 350 ppm if we are to prevent a global climate catastrophe. Present concentrations stand at 392 ppm.
We are participating in a rally on the Walkway over the Hudson sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County. A group picture will take place in the middle of the Walkway at 11 am. We urge you to join our Group Chair, Joanne Steele, behind the Sierra Club banner for this photo.
In order to demonstrate the need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, participants are urged to park as far away as feasible and approach the Walkway on foot, bike, roller skates/blades, or other manual devices. (Bring rain gear/umbrella just in case). From 9 am to 3 pm, Cornell Cooperative Extension will be distributing information about climate change at the Poughkeepsie Walkway entrance and along the Dutchess Rail Trail. For more details, see www.moving-planet.org/events/ us/poughkeepsie/310.
Another rally is taking place at T.R. Gallo Park in Kingston (on the Rondout, next to Mariner's Harbor) from 12 to 3 pm on Sat., featuring music, speeches by Congressman Maurice Hinchey and other politicians, and a canopy in case of rain. For questions, call Joanne Steele at (845) 338-0300.
