Chicken of the Sea.... you need to be protested! - a message from greenpeace

Watch the shocking footage obtained by Greenpeace and tell Chicken of the Sea to end the use of destructive fish aggregating devices (FADs).

It happens every day out on the water: Sharks, sea turtles, rays, dolphins and other animals are all brutally murdered for the sole purpose of getting canned tuna on the grocer’s shelf.

To the crews working on board these fishing vessels, it’s just part of the job and to tuna companies like Chicken of the Sea, it’s just the hidden cost of doing business. Until now.

Thanks to an industry whistle-blower, Greenpeace has obtained firsthand footage of the destruction caused by fish aggregation devices (FADs) and the ships that use them. The video pulls no punches in portraying the waste and cruelty of these operations. It truly is shocking and it has to stop.

So please take a minute to watch this video and then take action by sending a message to Chicken of the Sea asking them to end the use of FADs. Our goal is to make sure the company knows that 30,000 people have seen this video and are demanding change.

These fishing practices are putting endangered species and entire ocean ecosystems at risk of collapse. All because companies like Chicken of the Sea would rather cut corners than do things the right way.

We have the power to change this by putting pressure on Chicken of the Sea and other tuna companies to clean up their act.

Take action today and help put an end to the wasteful and destructive use of FADs by the tuna industry.

For the oceans,

Happy Thanksgiving

I received this email, below, this morning from Greenpeace. Its always nice to read something good in environmental news. Usually is all the stuff we need to fight. I really feel like my participation helped make a difference, no matter how small it was. So for anyone else out there doing there part please see below and the planet gives thanks for you.

Thanksgiving. It's the time a year that we take a minute to pause and remember all we're thankful for.

Your efforts have paid off in a big way this year. The last eleven months have been some of the most successful in the history of Greenpeace. Thanks to you, we...
  • Worked with one of the largest seafood retailers in the U.S., Costco, to establish a real sustainable seafood policy that included taking 12 red list species off their shelves.
  • Successfully ended a three-year campaign against the palm oil branch of the giant Indonesian company, Sinar Mas, when they unveiled a plan to stop destroying peatlands and forests in Indonesia for palm oil plantations.
  • Organized more than 200 vigils across the country in support of the Japanese people after the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
  • Teamed up with local activists on the ground in Virginia, Ohio and Massachusetts to close down dirty coal-fired power plants in those states.
  • Convinced the largest toy manufacturer in the world, Mattel, to stop doing business with notorious rainforest destroyers Asia Pulp & Paper. And thanks to the campaign, Lego and Hasbro did the same.
  • Ended vote buying at the International Whaling Commission -- making it harder for countries like Japan to bribe poor countries to support their pro-whaling stance. We continued to work with the Obama administration later in the year, getting them to impose diplomatic sanctions on Iceland for their continued illegal whaling.
So this Thanksgiving I will be giving thanks to YOU. You’re the one who has made these victories possible and you’re the reason why 2012 looks even brighter.

From all of us at Greenpeace, thank you for your continued support, activism and courage.
